Human Space ca 9815 CE

Einstein was right.  Or at least, in the macro universe, he was right.  Nothing can go faster than the speed of light.  There are no wormholes, although that doesn't stop scientists from trying.  Humanity has spread to the stars aboard Stardweller starships, proceeding at a portion of the speed of light.  Travel between worlds takes weeks.  Travel between stars takes decades.

Only information can travel faster than light.  Quantum physics powers the ansible.  Two quantumly entangled crystals will resonate at the exact same time, regardless of distance.  Thus, we can communicate between the stars in an instant.  We just can't go there.  Bandwidth is limited to the crystals that can survive the trip between the stars.  Lose one or other crystal, let one become unshielded for an instant, and no more talking.

Fermi Paradox:

The apparent size and age of the universe suggests that many technologically advanced extraterrestrial civilizations ought to exist.

However, this hypothesis seems inconsistent with the lack of observational evidence to support it.
